The Origins

The first historical commemoration of Castelfranco Veneto took place in 1997 when some citizens of the "borghi" (local villages and districts), expressed the desire to celebrate in some way the 800th anniversary of the construction of the castle walls of their town.
They formed "The Association of the Palio of Castelfranco Veneto" which is made up of local groups from the various areas and villages around the town along with the local tourist board.

The Medieval Fair  Saturday 8th September from 6pm till 12 midnight
                            Sunday 9th September from 11am till 11pm

The old part of the walled town of Castelfranco has not changed much since the Middle Ages. During the fair, numerous market stalls will be set up along its two main streets and little side streets, selling goods and food and drinks that could have been seen around the year 1300. There will also be musicians, street minstrels, soldiers and many others in historical costume , ready to recreate the atmosphere of the medieval market.
During the middle ages throughout the "Marca Trevigiana", Venetian coins of silver called "grosso" or "matapan" were in use. For the medieval fair of Castelfranco , these coins have been reproduced, although slightly bigger than the Venetian "grosso" and not in solid silver and they can be purchased and used in the taverns and stalls during the fair.

The original "grosso" was minted around 1202 in Venice but only started circulating inland about 50 years later. It was almost solid silver (965/1000), weighed 2.17 grams and was about 2cm in diameter. It continued to be widely used throughout the 13th and 14th centuries particularly in the Eastern Meditteranean countries.
The coin reproduced for the Medieval Fair has Christ the Redeemer seated on his throne, and on the other side St. Mark handing the standard to the Doge of Venice.

During the parade the consuls are formally received by the leading authorities of the town - the bishop of Treviso, the most powerful families of the time. Over 600 people take part in recreation of this historical event.

The "Castel D'Amore"  Sunday 9th September Piazza Giorgione Castelfranco at 5.30pm

This is a readaptation of an ancient game passionately played in the "Marca Trevigiana" and which in 1214 even sparked a war between the cities of Padua and Venice. The teams are formed from people from the various "borghi" of the town. Each team is led by a knight and they have to complete a course "of war" in order to reach their damsel waiting at the top of a wooden tower. The first team to reach and hand her a handerchief wins the "palio".

Sunday 9th September from 3pm to 8pm a commemorative stamp will be issued, dedicated to this year's theme, Exchanges and Barters.
There will also be the lottery of the Palio with numerous, interesting prices to be won.

The Palio of the "Castel d'Amore" is an official event of the European Consortium of Historical Commemorations. It is one of the most important historical events of the "Marcastorica" of the province of Treviso and part of "Veneto Storico", the Association of Historical Commemorations in the Veneto Region.
